My latest pet peeve

On my breaks from studying (I hate math), I've been reading some entertainment news, fanfic, et all.
In my reading, I've discovered a pet peeve of mine: people over-using dashes where commas or colons would be much better.
Examples:
""I'll just put it next to my bed," she said -- doing just that."
"Lara Flynn Boyle and Dylan McDermott's removal from TV show The Practice came as a complete shock to the cast and crew - because they were only expecting pay cuts. "
"The sequel to smash hit Bridget Jones's Diary has hit yet another stumbling block - this time over who will direct it. "
"Hollywood hunk Ben Affleck has become the latest celebrity to win a huge advertising contract - he is set to promote men's shampoo."
Christ, people, I know you're just entertainment reporters for a fucking website, but the least you can do is be stylistically correct! Sorry, that's all.
(In case anyone cares, I've been updating a lot lately because I've been holed up in here all fucking weekend)
